Although there are many stories that are partially or completely silent, most comic strip authors consider writing to be a fundamental element, inseparable from the graphic work of the frame and panel. Text often counts as much for its size, shape and position in the image as for its content alone. Letters swell, thin out or shake. They spill out of the bubbles and blend into the drawing. A writer like Will Eisner was a virtuoso of lettering variations, as early as 1940. Comics have never lacked sound or movement. It has found many ways to suggest them. Uderzo and Gotlib, Craig Thompson, Emil Ferris and most manga authors have made these intermediate signs between writing and drawing an essential part of their style.
