The page - or the plate - is the other fundamental unit of the comic strip. However, it's not taken for granted : Töpffer produced his stories in horizontal format, on a single strip. Monsieur Crépin, Monsieur Pencil or Doctor Festus could be presented as a wall frieze, like a long ribbon of images. At the beginning of the twentieth century, with the spectacular Sunday pages by Richard Outcault, Rudolph Dirks, Lyonel Feininger and a few others, the comic strip conquered a new dimension : it became an inseparable tableau and narrative. In the adventure stories that followed, the first function of the panel was to take its place in a larger story. This makes the pages that stand out all the more valuable.
