At a time when most artists were losing interest in the tradition of drawing, comics helped to keep it alive. But for a long time, totally spontaneous drawing seemed almost forbidden, due to the constraints imposed by reproduction techniques. This is one of the sources of the " ligne claire " style, found in works by Benjamin Rabier, Chris Ware, Hergé and Joost Swarte. However, far from being dedicated to a single style, comics can venture in very different directions, borrowing from realism and caricature, minimalism and engraving. From Alex Raymond to André Franquin, from Alberto Breccia to Julie Doucet, comics have never ceased to reveal their astonishing plasticity.
