Emmanuel Demarcy-Mota
At the age of seventeen, Emmanuel Demarcy-Mota founded the Compagnie des Millefontaines with fellow students from the Lycée Rodin, and continued the adventure while a student at the Sorbonne. Together, they tackled plays by numerous European authors (Büchner, Shakespeare, Pirandello, Brecht, Kleist...).
The revival of Peine d'amour perdue at the Théâtre de la Ville marked the beginning of a partnership with the venue. He created Pirandello's Six personnages en quête d'auteur, which won two prizes from the Syndicat national de la critique dramatique, and was followed by a first version of Ionesco's Rhinocéros and Brecht'sHomme pour homme .
Appointed director of the Comédie de Reims in 2001, he opened his first season with two productions by Fabrice Melquiot(L'Inattendu and Le Diable en partage), a playwright to whom he remained faithful, directing Ma vie de chandelle in 2004 and Marcia Hesse in 2005.
In 2008, he succeeded Gérard Violette as director of the Théâtre de la Ville. Emmanuel Demarcy-Mota strengthens the diversity of the program, giving it a more international tone and opening it up to foreign-language theater. His project focuses on three key areas: the children & youth program, the Chantiers d'Europe festival dedicated to young European creation, and the Danse élargie international competition in partnership with the Musée de la Danse. He also founded the Troupe du Théâtre de la Ville.
In June 2011, he was appointed head of the Festival d'Automne à Paris. He subsequently created Horváth's Casimir et Caroline, Roger Vitrac's Victor ou les Enfants au pouvoir and Ionesco Suite. While the re-creation of Rhinoceros toured the world (USA, London, Moscow, Barcelona, Athens, Santiago, Buenos Aires, Lisbon).
In 2015, he created Fabrice Melquiot's Alice et autres merveilles, which toured again in autumn 2016 and was recreated at Espace Cardin in December 2017.
Also in 2016, he strengthened international cooperation projects by developing an exchange with BAM (Brooklyn Academy of music-New York). As the Théâtre de la Ville's historic site closes for renovations, Emmanuel Demarcy-Mota and his teams move to the Espace Cardin, where he creates L'État de siège by Albert Camus in 2017, followed by Les Séparables by Fabrice Melquiot in 2018.
His latest staging, Les Sorcières de Salem after Arthur Miller, was performed in March-April 2019 at Espace Pierre Cardin.
