Laurent Bayle

A 1974 graduate of the Institut d'études politiques de Lyon, Laurent Bayle began by teaching modern literature, before becoming involved in Lyon's theater scene, joining the Théâtre de l'Est lyonnais as assistant director in 1977.

In 1978, he became general administrator of the Atelier lyrique du Rhin in Colmar, and at the same time delegated production (1980 and 1982 editions) of the Biennale Voix, Théâtre et Musiques d'Aujourd'hui organized at the Théâtre des Amandiers in Nanterre.

In 1982, Laurent Bayle founded the Musica festival in Strasbourg, which he directed for four years. The success of this event led to his appointment as Artistic Director of IRCAM in 1986, then as Director of the Institute after Pierre Boulez's departure in 1992.

Since December 15, 2001, he has been General Director of the Cité de la Musique. The Minister of Culture also entrusted him with implementing the reopening of Salle Pleyel from September 2006. He is currently General Manager of the Cité de la musique - Philharmonie de Paris, a major musical facility including a 2,400-seat concert hall and an educational center, co-financed by the French government and the City of Paris.
