Frédéric Maire

Born in 1961 in Neuchâtel (Switzerland), of Swiss and Italian nationality, Frédéric Maire has been working in the film industry since the early 80s, as a director, producer, journalist and critic for several French-speaking Swiss and Italian media.

Since 1986, he has contributed to the publications and programming of the Locarno International Film Festival. From 1988 to 1992, he taught introductory film courses at the École cantonale d'Art de Lausanne. In 1991, he co-founded Passion Cinéma, an auteur film programming unit. In 1992, he co-founded and co-directed the children's film club La Lanterne Magique.

In 2005, he was appointed Artistic Director of the Locarno International Film Festival. In October 2009, he became director of the Cinémathèque suisse. In May 2017, he was elected President of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF).
