Abstract

Water is used for many economic purposes, from river transport to irrigation methods and industrial activities. They have all left their mark on the principles and rules applicable in this field. The question of the economic value of water has more recently appeared on the international agenda, particularly in the context of trade and investment law. These economic uses must give way to the demands of sustainable development. A variety of legal concepts and rules are being used to regulate and, in some cases, restrict these uses.
