Abstract

The challenge of climate change, with its many impacts (inter alia, melting glaciers, drought, flooding), underlines the need for sustainable water management. Instruments and actions must address uncertainty while mitigating risks. Environmental protection treaties, such as the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance and the Convention on Biological Diversity, contribute to better management of water resources. The same applies to environmental law principles such as prevention and environmental impact assessment. The role of these instruments will be assessed in the light of practical experience.
