Presentation

The work of Karl Marx and the various " Marxisms " to which it gave rise had an impact on the development of the humanities and social sciences from the late 19th century onwards in France, beyond their political and ideological influence. The uses to which Marx's work was put, the influence of his ideas and political program, and the resistance they provoked, touch on the history of socialism and workers' movements in France and around the world, the rise of political economy in the 19th century, anti-German prejudice in France, the rise and decline of communism in the 20th century, and the political and intellectual activism of the 1960s and 1970s. Their study has opened up a vast field of research, rarely approached in a comprehensive manner.

The aim of this symposium is to contribute to such research, from the point of view of the history of science and its disciplines, in an establishment whose mission is to welcome and produce new knowledge. The aim is to revisit the problem of the reception of Karl Marx in France in the light of the reception and debate of Marx's thought and program at the Collège de France, taking into account the sometimes late translations of his writings, notably by scholars more or less closely associated with the history of Marxism in France.

The focus will be on the relationship between knowledge and politics, the fusion or tension between scientific and political objectives, and the relations between the French scholarly and political worlds and Germany in various fields of knowledge, from the end of the 19th century and throughout the 20th century. Following on from the colloquia organized as part of " Passage des disciplines : histoire globale du Collège de France, XIXe-XXe siècle " on the reception of " fondateurs de discursivité " at the Collège de France, our colloquium will focus on the presence of Marx's work in the work, readings and positions taken by professors at the Collège de France, and, where applicable, during the procedure for renewing professorships.
