Abstract

From Senegambia to Mali, from Niger to Chad, the Sahel region offers an exceptional corpus of stone monuments and monumental structures. This presentation will offer a history of research and outline the main archaeological missions, monument deposits, monuments and publications. Based on the archaeological work carried out to date, it will also propose a typological, chronological and functional approach to these monuments. It will also raise the question of the social identification of their authors.
