Abstract

To date, over four hundred thousand megalithic and monumental structures have been recorded in the Sahara. Funerary monuments make up the bulk of these structures, far ahead of dwellings, trapping devices and ritual or cult monuments. These structures, built over the last six millennia, are also very unevenly distributed in space. The study of distribution areas and the consideration of several factors - climate, geology, rock art, fishing and hunting gear, linguistic elements - allow us to better understand the settlement of the Sahara, the interactions between the various populations and their evolution over time. With such a database, we can even envisage a study of the demography of the Sahara since the mid-Holocene.
