Abstract

This paper presents a synthesis of cultural developments in the Sahara, starting with the reoccupation of the region around 12,000-10,000 BP, after the long arid period corresponding to the last glacial maximum. The resumption of the monsoon regime and the beginning of the "African wet period" saw the repopulation of the region by new societies, and thus the start of an entirely new cultural cycle after a long phase of abandonment. Even if we can identify a space in the Sahara with recurring characteristics, it is clear that the events were not synchronous and that, what's more, the sequences are not complete in all territories. For an adequate reconstruction of this phase, it is necessary to be able to rely on a complete set of environmental, technological and demographic information. This presentation will focus on the most reliable territories and examples, for an up-to-date reconstruction of Early Holocene cultural events in the Sahara.
