Abstract

Inequalities in depression are marked. These psychological disorders are more frequent among women and people from the most disadvantaged social categories. Based on public health survey data and recent sociological research, this session will examine the gendered nature of the very definition of depressive disorders, and analyze how gender norms tend to shape the way women and men are exposed differently to depressive disorders. We will also look at the way in which the people concerned apprehend these disorders, the conditions under which they turn to the healthcare system, and the responses of healthcare professionals according to the gender of their patients.
