Created in partnership with the national agency Santé Publique France, the annual Santé Publique Chair is designed to encourage excellence in research and intellectual debate at the highest level on public health issues.

The social production of health inequalities

Health inequalities, as revealed by health statistics, are the result of social processes that construct them over the course of a lifetime, in given social, economic and environmental contexts. The aim of this lecture is to make visible the processes that contribute to these inequalities, which are inscribed in social structures, being reflected and even amplified during the various stages of a person's healthcare pathway : from exposure to health problems, to conditions of access to care, right through to the care provided by the healthcare system. Various health problems will be addressed, including Covid-19, cardiovascular disease, mental health, sexual health and occupational health. The interventions, which will analyze different stages in the production of health inequalities, will be based on work from an intersectional perspective that articulates social relations of power referring to gender, class and ethno-racial positions. The quantitative and qualitative research presented focuses on the general population and various social groups (sexual and gender minorities, migrants, people deprived of liberty).
