Abstract

The possible origin of enhancersequences in the course of evolution will be discussed, as well as the potential recruitment of a particular pre-existing sequence to perform an additional function (co-option). The use of transposable elements as regulatory sequences now appears to be an important source of gene expression variation, which may have accompanied the emergence of new morphological or physiological traits in the course of evolution.
