The advent of artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed the way we interact with computers. Although AI can sometimes replace humans, it is most often designed to help them, for example in decision-support tasks. Yet much of today's research focuses on how to create more powerful algorithms, and less on how these algorithms affect the people who use them. This lesson traces the history of the relationship between AI and HMI, including my own research into human-machine partnerships, where users remain in control of the interaction in order to move from the "human-in-the-loop" to the "computer-in-the-loop" paradigm.
