Abstract

This lecture will focus on the paradox of invasions: biological invasions are particularly important, yet little recognized or even simply known. We will discuss the reasons for this, exploring society's perception of biological invasions, which includes a consequent share of misunderstanding, even rejection of its importance, between skepticism and even scientific denial. We will then explain the reasons for this, which are rooted in several important points that fundamentally distinguish it from other processes of biodiversity loss, such as climate change, pollution or habitat destruction. You'll then understand how biological invasions blur the nuances of biodiversity, painting a monochrome on the shimmering canvas of our ecosystems.
