Abstract
This lecture will focus on one of the five global drivers of biodiversity loss, biological invasions. Through a variety of examples, we will explore definitions, concepts, patterns and trends. We will summarize the major global figures revealed by the 2023 report on the global assessment of invasive alien species: the IPBES report (the International Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services). We will thus see that this extremely impactful factor generates an astonishing paradox in the field of biodiversity protection: one of the worst causes of biodiversity loss and yet one of the least understood
misunderstood. You'll see why mentioning the terrible names of the zebra mussel, the yellow crazy ant or the pink wolf snail makes ecologists tremble.
