Abstract

Glenn Brown will focus on what is involved in the process of making a painting. He will discuss 6 or 7 of his paintings in detail, describing their evolution from idea to finished work. The stages will be described from the early sketches to the first layers of paint, to the final elaboration of layers of paint as the work transforms. He will discuss the influences on him of other artists that are directly reflected in a painting's subject matter, transformation and color references. He will use selected paintings to illustrate how the time it takes to make a work (sometimes years) produces a layered and complex end result, and how the comments and feedback of others in the studio are crucial to the development of the work. He will discuss the importance of the context in which the work is made and shown. One painting influences another, and we can learn from mistakes and successes. It's also important to realize that a painting is usually part of a whole or a group of other works. When contemplating a painting, the finiteness of its display and environment is of great importance.

Glenn Brown

Born in England in 1966, Glenn Brown lives and works in London. He pursues an international career, and his paintings are included in major collections. His work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, including Serpentine Gallery, London (2004); Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (2008); Tate Liverpool, as well as numerous group shows such as Cher Peintre, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (2002). Glenn Brown doesn't hesitate to rework famous paintings in his own acidic yet disquieting way. The highly specific movement of his brushstrokes creates fine, swirling lines of color.
