Abstract

The artist will discuss the gothic and darker content of his painting, and how pop sensibilities can make these images more tangible to a wide audience. He will also raise the possibility that the physical act of painting is the result of a state of metaphysical trance.

Hernan Bas was born in 1978 in Miami. He lives and works between Miami and Detroit. Already well-recognized on the international art market, he has been the subject of two major solo exhibitions: The Other Side at Kunstverein Hanover in 2012, and a retrospective at the Rubell Family Collection - Miami in 2007 (subsequently shown at the Brooklyn Museum of Art in 2009). His paintings depict melancholy young men in vast, chaotic landscapes. His mixed-media technique concentrates a wide variety of pictorial gestures: imprint effects, rubbing, expressionist movements, etc.
