Debating, confronting and insulting : parliamentary and media arenas

From tribunes to plateaux : the circulation of insults in France since the 19th century

Certain characteristics of political confrontation over the long term can be clarified if we take as our starting point a set of insults formulated over the last two centuries inside and/or outside the parliamentary arena. Beyond the sombre brilliance of words, insults are a good indicator of the evolution of relationships between authors, targets and third parties in times of crisis, between the Restoration and the Fifth Republic.
