After seven years of closure for renovations, the Institut des Civilisations du Collège de France, located at 52, rue du Cardinal-Lemoine, will reopen to researchers and specialists on September1st 2023.
Covering more than 7 000 square meters, the Institut des Civilisations brings together all the professorships, laboratories and eleven research libraries of the Collège de France dealing with the great civilizations of the past, as well as unwritten societies. Its ambition is to become an international flagship for research in ancient and modern history, epigraphy, philology and anthropology. Its scientific project is based, on the one hand, on a high degree of interdisciplinarity and, on the other, on the optimal integration of research, the dissemination of knowledge and scientific documentation : its world-renowned libraries, with over 19 000 linear meters of books and hundreds of online resources.
Its renovation, carried out by the Jacques Moussafir et Cusson associésagency , involved a complete restructuring and modernization of the spaces around the central garden. The architectural intention is fully in line with the institute's scientific project, reorganized around four main poles : Anthropology, Ancient Egypt and Near East, Mediterranean and African Worlds, and Asian Worlds.
Covering the cultural and social history and ethnology of the five continents, the Institute stands out for the exceptional wealth of its documentary and precious holdings, the number and excellence of its researchers, the qualifications of its scientific and technical staff, and its international renown.
