Ancient Egypt and Near East Division

Presentation

The Egyptology Library holds a specialized collection of 39,000 books and 342 printed journal titles, as well as online books and databases on Pharaonic Egypt from the Predynastic period to Roman times. Its holdings cover hieroglyphic, hieratic, demotic and Coptic philology, linguistics and paleography, as well as the epigraphy, history and archaeology of Egypt and Nubia. It also includes studies on the representation of Pharaonic Egypt from the end of paganism to the present day.

In 2008, it received a donation of 15,000 titles from the library of Professor Jean Leclant.

It also holds the scientific and photographic archives of former professors and Egyptologists from France and abroad.

It offers 23 Wifi-equipped seats, one of which can be reserved in advance.

In 2018, the collections of the Egyptology Library were awarded the " Collections of Excellence"label by the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation.

Access conditions

Access reserved for university lecturers, researchers and students at Master's level and above, on the recommendation of their supervisor. Undergraduate students may be admitted temporarily on the recommendation of their thesis supervisor.

The reader's card is issued on justification of research, and is valid for one year.

In exceptional circumstances, the library may accept people with a specific need to consult its collections, on the advice of the Institute's director and subject to availability.

Documents may not be borrowed.

Interlibrary loan (ILL):

This service enables registered readers to borrow documents not held at the Collège de France from external libraries. Requests are centralized by Collège de France's Department of Libraries, Archives and Collections (DBAC), and any reader wishing to obtain a document is invited to write to the following address:
