The Chairin Philosophy of Language and Mind hosts the teaching of the incumbent, Prof. Recanati, as well as the Chair's own colloquia, seminars and study days, and guest lectures. The fields covered by these lectures and events are analytical philosophy, and more specifically the two sub-disciplines mentioned in the chair's title : Philosophy of Language and Mind, the former maintaining close links with contemporary linguistics, and the latter with cognitive science.

The Chair is also home to the research activitiescarried outby Prof. Recanati and his collaborators in threeseparate but interconnected frameworks :

  • The Esprit et Langage team, headed by Prof. Recanati at the Institut Jean-Nicod (UMR 8129, CNRS/ENS/EHESS) and home to his doctoral and post-doctoral students.
  • The Essential Indexicality and Thoughts about Experienceresearch project , conducted in partnership with the University of Freiburg (Pr Martine Nida-Rümelin) and funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR-22-CE93-0004, 2023-2025). The project, hosted at the Collège de France, investigates the relationships between three major themes in contemporary Philosophy of Language and Mind : mental indexicality, phenomenal consciousness, and the transparency of mental contents.
  • The Mental Files: New Foundationsresearch project , funded by the European Science Council (101141267- FILE- ERC-2023-ADG, 2024-2029). This project, also hosted at the Collège de France, is devoted to the theory of mental files, born of the convergence of varied research in several disciplines (in analytic philosophy, linguistics, the psychology of perception and developmental psychology). The research program resulting from this convergence of ideas has been articulated by François Recanati in two books (Mental Files, OUP 2012, and Mental Files in Flux, OUP 2016), but the " indexical model " he has proposed gives rise to a debate that the project aims precisely to arbitrate.
