Abstract

Is it really necessary to talk about colonial slavery? Since 2006, May 10 has been the national day of remembrance of the slave trade, slavery and their abolition. Why and how was this decision taken? What is its purpose? How has it been celebrated to date? Françoise Vergès will answer these questions in her introduction, but above all she will ask the following questions: What's the point? Is it really necessary? Why talk about memories? Doesn't this mean remaining anchored in the past? What is the relationship with the issues of our time - globalization, migrants and refugees, human rights, gender and racialization processes?
