Abstract

Portrayals of the Phoenicians alternate between a dark legend of sacrifice to the god Moloch, already present in Flaubert's Salammbô, and a Mediterranean vision of bold traders reaching out beyond known seas. The latter image is found among the Lebanese Phoenician apologists for a "merchant republic". In recent decades, these representations have also found their way into comic strips, which have popularized this image of the Phoenician.
