Abstract

The talk will cover the period from the founding of the Collège Royal in 1530, Guillaume Postel (16th century), Savary de Brèves and the former students of the Maronite College in Rome, authors of the Polyglot Bible and teachers of oriental languages at the Collège Royal (Sionita, Ecchelensis and Hesronita), as well as the German Johan Strauch's magisterial thesis on "the law school of Beryte and Phoenicia" presented in 1662, for the 17th century. For the 18th century, we have Abbé Foucher, Voltaire and the Jesuit missions in Lebanon. For the 19th century, we have Alfred Antoine Peretie, the Renan mission, Osman Hamdy Bey, Baltazzi, Rainach, Loytved, Durighello and the German mission.
