How does fundamental research lead to innovation? I'll use a few simple examples to show how many recent advances in information and communication technologies (computers, telephones, etc.) have come from advances in pure fundamental physics. I'll also talk about the possible future of our computing, which could be brought about either by skyrmions - mobile magnetization nano-balls derived from the exploitation of topology concepts - or by computers whose components will be inspired by the neurons and synapses of our brains.
