The machine metaphor does not apply well to living elements. Every cell derives from a cell. Every living thing derives from another living thing. The future dynamics of an ecosystem can only be understood in the light of its past history. Synthetic organisms derive from other living beings. The genotype-phenotype relationship is best understood in terms of differences. Over generations, living organisms accumulate genetic differences from their ancestors.
