Abstract

Between 2012 and 2018, I led a research program on ceramic production in Pompeii, focusing on the only two potters' workshops known to have been in operation at the time of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. è. These workshops offer a fairly complete panorama of this craft activity, if we take into account their topographical location (one workshop outside the walls, one in town), the visible remains (basins, kilns, towers...), their functional organization and their production. The results obtained enable us to reconstruct the entire operating chain of Pompeian potters, from the supply of raw materials to the distribution of their products.
