Abstract

This presentation reviews the state of archaeological research into the spread of the villa in the ancient Roman province of Dalmatia (now Croatia).

Over and above this work, the research carried out by a Franco-Croatian team has above all enabled us to develop our knowledge of olive oil and wine production in this region. Although ancient texts extol the quality of the oil produced on this side of the Adriatic, until now little work had been done on this issue, combining the history of techniques, archaeological and ethnographic surveys and chemical analyses.

Work carried out in the region since 2015 has also brought to light an invisible aspect of the economy of ancient domains, namely honey production. This aspect of the research will also be presented here, thanks to work carried out in collaboration with Laboratoire Nicolas Garnier.
