Abstract

Initially, nineteenth-century literature was driven by the need for a double affirmation : that of victory over colonialism and slavery, and that of Black people's belonging to humanity. But by the end of the nineteenth century, poets were already looking inward, writing verses that have always protected us from nationalism in literature. The novels of this period are no longer words turned outwards to affirm an existence, but words that attempt to define a local " nous ".
