The research carried out by the PROCLAC laboratory (Near East - Caucasus : languages, archaeology, cultures), UMR 7192 of the CNRS, covers a vast territory stretching from the Mediterranean to the Caucasus. In chronological terms, our research takes a long-term approach, from protohistory to the present day. Our UMR is renowned for its multi-disciplinary approach, thanks to the expertise of its members in a wide range of human and social science fields: archaeology, linguistics, philology, history, geography, literature, etc. This transdisciplinarity is embodied in research projects, as well as in an annual study day.
The laboratory is organized into four teams (Mesopotamian Worlds, Biblical and Northwest Semitic Studies, Medieval and Modern Islam, Turkish and Caucasian Space). Several programs, some of which are cross-disciplinary, are linked to these teams, and include numerous operations (ANR, ERC, PSL projects, archaeological excavations).
The PROCLAC laboratory brings together members working in several institutions: the Collège de France, the École Pratique des Hautes Études and the CNRS, which are the supervisory bodies, as well as various institutions under the aegis of the French Ministry of Culture (such as the Louvre Museum and the Bibliothèque Nationale). In 2022, it will have 24 full members, 10 contract staff, 35 associates (emeritus, retired, members of other secondary structures, foreign associates), 1 administrative staff and numerous PhD students, who are trained in and through research thanks to their close association with the work carried out in the laboratory.
UMR 7192 has very close links with the Société Asiatique (its president and vice-president are members of the UMR).
