Equity outside the law

A book that takes into account the polysemy, ambiguity and diversity of legacies of the notion of equity.

How can equity be defined ? How can it be applied in times of pandemics, when shaping climate policy or when considering multilingualism ? Constantly evoked but always equivocal, equity has for centuries raised questions about both its definition and its practical application.
Starting with the ancient meanings of equity, this book examines the diffraction of this originally legal, rhetorical and ethical notion into other disciplines in contemporary times. It compares its meaning in antiquity with the way it is used in today's sciences, through the prism of modern thinking. Thus, from a diachronic perspective, ancient law, rhetoric, religious sciences, history and archaeology meet contemporary philosophy, economics, ethics, environmental law, sociology, linguistics and comparative law.
