To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Byzantium 1200, a website designed to bring together 3D digital reconstructions of the monuments of Byzantine Constantinople, the Centre d'Histoire et de Civilisation de Byzance and the Byzantine Library are delighted to welcome Tayfun Öner, its creator, who will present his various projects and animations ranging from the city's urban plan to that of the Hippodrome, from the Grand Palace to the port of Theodosius I, in addition to the monumental and as yet unpublished work he has completed under the expert guidance of Jonathan Bardill on the church of St. Polyeucte (Saraçhte). Polyeucte (Saraçhane) founded by the famous princess Anicia Juliana, great-granddaughter of Emperor Theodosius I, in the first quarter of the 6th century.
At the same time, Bardill explores the architectural development that led to the creation of this magnificent monument, and gives his answer to the main question as to whether the church of Saint-Polyeucte had a dome. The meticulous 3D reconstruction of the church is based in particular on sculpted material preserved in the Istanbul Archaeological Museum, set against written sources (including a long poem preserved in the Palatine Anthology) and archaeological excavations carried out in the 1960s and recently resumed.
These two lectures, given as part of "Celebrating Thirty Years of Digital Modelling of Constantinople (1994-2024)", and moderated by Brigitte Pitarakis (CNRS), are open to a wide audience, including students of antiquity and medieval studies, Western studies and Byzantine studies, with an interest in the digital humanities.
