François Déroche is a member of the Institut (Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres) and Professor at the Collège de France, where he has held the History of the Qurʾān, Text and Transmission chair since 2015. He is a specialist in Arabic manuscripts, with a particular interest in the written transmission of the Koranic text. A former student at the École normale supérieure de la rue d'Ulm, he trained in Semitic languages before joining the Bibliothèque nationale, where he was in charge of cataloguing Quranic manuscripts. A scientific member of the Institut français d'études anatoliennes (1983-1986), he worked on manuscript collections in Istanbul, notably at the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art. In 1990, he was elected to a post at the École Pratique des Hautes Études, specializing in the history and codicology of the Arabic manuscript book. His publications focus on codicology(Manuel de codicologie des manuscrits en écriture arabe, 2000), the history of the Arabic manuscript book(Le Livre manuscrit arabe. Préludes à une histoire, 2004) and early Islamic Koranic manuscripts(La Transmission écrite du Coran dans les débuts de l'islam. Le codex Parisino-petropolitanus, 2009; Qur'ans of the Umayyads, 2014; Le Coran, une histoire plurielle, 2019).
