The contribution of analysis, ceramology and epigraphy to the study of perfumes in antiquity

The seminar developed particular aspects of the perfume production presented in the lecture, inviting specialists and presenting the results of recent excavations at Delos, Pompeii and Paestum to Oxford University and research in Campania to the Università Federico II in Naples.

In Paris, the seminar on October 24 2012 focused on " Les analyses chimiques des flacons à parfum antiques ", with archaeological analysis chemist Nicolas Garnier, and that on November 7 on " Les parfums à l'époque archaïque ", with Dominique Frère from the University of Rennes. On November 28 , Nicolas Tran, Professor at the Institut Universitaire de France and the University of Poitiers, presented " L'épigraphie des parfumeurs à l'époque romaine ". On December 5 2012, the seminar was devoted to the excavation of perfumeries in Pompeii : Professor Albert Ribera, municipal archaeologist of Valencia (Spain) and Macarena Bustamante, from the Archaeological Centre of Merida (Spain) detailed the Franco-Spanish research underway in the Via degli Augustali. On December 12 , Xavier Fernandez, Professor of Chemistry at the University of Nice, showed how it was possible to get closer to " The reconstitution of ancient perfumes " by combining chemical analysis and experimentation.

Program
