Abstract

Ostraca are not the preferred medium for inscribing literary texts ; literary texts are not common in the mountains of Egypt's eastern desert. However, a handful of literary ostraca in Greek were recently found in a small gold-mining village not far from the Mons Claudianus quarries. These include verses dedicated to Dionysus and the funeral epigram of a sailor.
