Abstract

In the course of this lecture, we propose to examine the extent to which the sections of ancient lexicons concerning realia are likely to reflect the practical use of terminology as observed in papyrological documentation, and hence the extent to which these texts can serve lexicographical investigations. To answer these questions, we will look at the problematic identification of certain fruit trees mentioned in papyrological sources, cross-referencing the contributions of documentary texts and archaeobotanical sources, before comparing the results of the survey with lexicons and other ancient vocabularies.
