Abstract

TheInfancy Gospel according to Thomas is an early Christian apocryphal text that recounts the miracles of Jesus as a child, in the style of biblical fan fiction. A best-seller in late antiquity and the Middle Ages, the story was transmitted in numerous medieval manuscripts and in several languages : Greek, Latin, Syriac, Arabic, Ethiopian, Georgian and Slavonic. However, it is a small fragment of papyrus from Egypt, recently discovered in the Hamburg papyrological collection, that contains the oldest evidence of this text. This paper will present the papyrus, its context of production and use in Byzantine Egypt, and its contribution to our knowledge of theInfancy Gospel.
