Why migrate ? What do we gain and what do we lose by migrating?

Economic and non-economic motivations. The rise and development of " gravity models " of migration since Adam Smith : Ravenstein, Zipf, Sjaastad, Becker. Migration as an investment of human capital in a more profitable market. Should modeling separate international from internal migration ? How economic modeling has been extended to all types of migration. The scope and limits of this extension, particularly for asylum and refuge. The paradox of migration : a phenomenon that is both rare (in quantity) and ordinary (in its motivations).
