Abstract

The story of the walls of Jericho, which collapsed without military intervention but as the result of a ritual, emphasizes the importance of divine intervention. Archaeologically, the search for these walls was a failure. No doubt the place was already a field of ruins when the author composed the story. The story thematizes the practice of the forbidden (hèrèm), also mentioned in the King Mesha stele. We seek to understand the historicity and function of such a ritual.
