Abstract

After the first divine speech to Joshua, the conquest is "delayed" by the visits of two spies to a Canaanite prostitute. This story reflects the link between war and prostitution. But Rahab's story also introduces a dose of subversion, as this prostitute protects the enemies of her people.

The complex and intricate story of Joshua 3-4 makes the crossing of the Jordan the prerequisite for conquest. The story includes the Ark of the Covenant, as well as priests and Levites. We'll explore the links with the crossing of the sea in the book of Exodus and the question of the place of miracles in conquest narratives.
