Abstract
This first lecture will trace the evolution of knowledge on the relationship between the immune and nervous systems. From an initial vision of two isolated systems to the recognition of their dynamic interconnections, it will present the major discoveries that revealed the existence of immune cells in the nervous system, shared molecular mediators, and the first observations of functional dialogues between neuronal activity and immune response.
