Since 2021, Francesco Solinas has held the Comparative Literatures chair held by Prof. William Marx. An art historian and art critic, he studied at the University of Pisa with Profs Roberto Paolo Ciardi and Paola Barocchi (1978-1983).
In 1993, at the invitation of Prof. Marc Fumaroli, Solinas was appointed visiting lecturer at the Collège de France ;appointed in 1998, he was attached to Prof. Marc Fumaroli's chair (Rhetoric and Society in Europe - XVIe-XVIIe - 1993-2002) and, in 2009, to Prof. Antoine Compagnon's chair Modern and Contemporary French Literature. He is a member of the Respublica-Literaria research team (République des savoirs, UAR 3608 du CNRS).
Since the 1980s, his research has focused on 16th and 17thcentury painting and the relationship between artistic creation and politics, diplomacy, antiquarian and scientific culture. A specialist in documentary drawing and scientific illustration, he has studied the evolution of genre painting : portraiture, still life and landscape.
Working with Prof. Fumaroli, his research and publications have focused on the major themes of the Republic of Letters and the Arts between the Renaissance and the Age of Enlightenment, in particular the circulation of works between Italy and the rest of Europe.
