Herodotus recounts a legend according to which the Pelasges, a seafaring people, built the earliest walls of the Acropolis and, as a reward, the Athenians gave them land at the foot of the Hymette... Thus began a series of adventures and geopolitical claims, which ultimately contributed to consolidating the territory of Attica and reinforcing Athenian superiority in the Aegean world. This ancient Greek legend is linked to archaeological remains that are not easy to date. Today's historians often find it difficult to distinguish mythical elements from scientific data, and our studies are based as much on objective arguments as on interpretative theories...
