Climate change and social dynamics. From the deep past to the uncertain future

The history of climate and societies enriches our understanding of the past and enables us to better assess the risks of climate change.

Our destiny has always been inseparable from that of the environment. To understand the role played by the environment in the past, we need to consider climate and human society as a complex system, sometimes resistant to disturbance, sometimes sensitive to rapid change, with cascading effects. Drawing on paleoclimatology, complexity models and historical case studies, this book shows that integrating natural archives into history can greatly enrich our understanding of the past and present, and thus help us to better assess the risks associated with climate change.
