On September 22 1822, Jean-François Champollion, in a state of extreme excitement, completed his famous Lettre à M. Dacier, secrétaire perpétuel de l'Académie royale des inscriptions et belles-lettres. In it, he explains how he unlocked the mystery of Egyptian hieroglyphs, delivering the founding text of their decipherment. In this book, which celebrates the bicentenary of this event, specialists tell the story of the deciphering of ancient writings, but also explain a practice that comes into play in fields as varied as the sciences of the Universe, biology, cryptography, linguistics, the interpretation of works of art, rhetoric and hermeneutics.
