Founded in 1863 by an act of the US Congress, signed by President Abraham Lincoln, the US National Academy of Sciences is a forum of scientists charged with providing independent and objective advice on matters related to science and technology.

As part of the 152nd NAS Annual Meeting in Washington, Prof. Édouard Bard, Chair of Climate and Ocean Evolution, was received on March 25, 2015 as a Foreign Member for the Geology and Geophysics Sections.

At the induction ceremony, NAS President Ralph Cicerone, a specialist in atmospheric chemistry, noted that "through the innovative use of cosmogenic nuclides and isotopic tracers, Édouard Bard had provided key constraints on geological, astronomical and anthropogenic processes varying global climate and sea level."

Édouard Bard is one of some 30 French foreign members of the NAS, around half of whom are professors at the Collège de France.
