The International Society of Hypertension (ISH) 2021 Award, which recognizes women who have made outstanding contributions to experimental and clinical hypertension research, is presented to Catherine Llorens-Cortes for her work on the identification of new therapeutic targets and the development of new compounds for the treatment of hypertension, heart failure and hyponatremia.
Catherine Llorens-Cortes is a neuroendocrinologist and neuropharmacologist, and director of INSERM Unit U691, set up in 2004 within the Centre interdisciplinaire de recherche en biologie (CIRB) at Collège de France. Since the beginning of her scientific career, she has been interested in biologically active peptides, and mainly in the enzymes that break down active peptides or participate in their formation. Her early work on endogenous morphines contributed to the development of an anti-diarrheal drug used in pediatrics. Subsequently, Catherine Llorens-Cortes focused her research on the interface between neuroscience and the cardiovascular field.
